What is the Deutschlandticket?
The Deutschlandticket is a new ticket introduced on the 01st of May 2023 that costs €49 per month and is valid on local public transport throughout Germany.
Do students get the ticket cheaper?
No, unfortunately not. Neither is there a discounted Deutschlandticket for students, nor is there any crediting with the VRN (the local public transportation corporation) for the amounts paid with the semester contribution. The Verkehrsreferat has spoken out in favor of such a credit, but the VRN only did this if a full Semesterticket would be included within the semester fee. This is not the case with us, the Semesterticket must still be purchased separately.
What if you have the Semesterticket?
Unfortunately, those who have a Semesterticket cannot exchange it or upgrade to a Deutschlandticket. This would be desirable, but is not feasible at VRN.
What if you have the JugendticketBW?
Those who have the JugendticketBW can easily switch to the Deutschlandticket, as these are both modes of subscription and therefore the VRN has the data. Incidentally, switching to the Deutschlandticket is also a way to shorten the duration of the JugendticketBW, the latter normally lasting for at least six months.
Are HiWis entitled to the Deutschlandticket as a job ticket?
The university also offers the Deutschlandticket as a job ticket for €22.05. The extent to which HiWis are also entitled to this is currently somewhat unclear. According to the university’s website, Hilfskräfte (under which category HiWis do fall) are not eligible for this, but there are individuals who have received it. You can just try it out.
